Kentucky basketball’s statement win over the then-ninth ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday seems to be less impressive than what most perceived. The Wildcats took down the Tar Heels, 80-72, in Chicago’s CBS Sports Classic for their ninth victory of the season.
When Monday’s Associated Press Top-25 poll was released, Kentucky climbed just three spots to the 16th slot. North Carolina, despite having more losses than Kentucky and also losing the head-to-head matchup, remains slightly ahead of the Wildcats in the 14th slot.
Though their previous record of 8-2 record isn’t anything to be ashamed of, the Wildcats simply didn’t have any quality wins during that stretch. A stellar performance away from Rupp Arena (over a top-10 team) was believed by many to be that signature win the Wildcats were looking for.
Despite putting a hush to their critics, Kentucky will need to prove themselves even more to continue their slow climb back to their pre-season top-2 ranking.
Following this week’s holiday, Kentucky will have one of their better shots of the season.
On Saturday, the Wildcats travel to Louisville for their annual matchup with the Cardinals. After blowing out the birds last December, 90-61, Kentucky will surely face a hostile environment for Saturday’s game.
First year head coach Chris Mack has lit a competitive fire under the Cardinals, having them out to a 9-3 start that includes a win over ninth-ranked Michigan State.
A win at the KFC Yum Center would only bolster Kentucky’s Top-25 ranking, while a loss will leave critics asking the same questions regarding inconsistencies on the hardwood.
