The Todd County Central Rebels will play Saturday for the consolation bracket championship of the 2018 South Central Bank-Halton Classic at Allen County-Scottsville. The Rebels advanced to the consolation final by knocking off Sayre 60-56 Friday afternoon.
The Rebels, who lost to Daviess County in their opening round game, behind a solid defensive effort, got the lead on the Spartans early in the game. Todd Central took a 16-9 lead after the opening quarter.
The second quarter saw the teams essentially go toe-to-toe. As they headed to the locker room at the half, Todd Central led Sayre 31-23. The Spartans were able to stay within shouting distance in the first half due to shooting 50-percent from the field.
Sayre could make no headway against the Rebels early in the second half. Each team put up 15 points in the third quarter, which ended with the Rebels holding a 46-38 lead.
The Spartans made their move in the 4th quarter to come from behind. However, Todd County Central did enough down the stretch to come away with the 60-56 win. The Rebels, while shooting only 39.1-percent from the field in the second half, did go 8 of 8 at the free throw line to help seal the win.
Deonite Toliver and Austin Rager had 12 points each to lead the Rebels. Clayte Weathers added 10. A big day for big man John Calvery, who had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Will Hairston had 21 for Sayre.
The win ups the Rebels to 5-9 on the season.
