A three-point lead with less than 3 minutes to go slipped away from Caldwell County Thursday night in the Kentucky 2A Championships. Host Webster County used an 8-0 run to grab the lead and went on to down the Tigers 71-64 in a Section I Tournament quarterfinal round contest in Dixon.

Caldwell (10-6) was as close as 65-62 when Derrin Boyd made two free throws with 27 seconds to play. But Webster (11-6) made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Tigers.

Turnovers plagued Caldwell in the final 3 minutes, with the Tigers failing to even get off a shot on several offenses trips.

Caldwell, which defeated Webster 74-65 earlier this season in Princeton, led by as much as five points twice in the final frame in the rematch.

But Tyler Camplin scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to help spearhead the Trojans’ comeback.

Webster also got 16 points from Aden Winn, 14 from Malachi Douglas and 12 from Destin Allen.

Cayden Fraliex led the Tigers with 20 points. It was a Fraliex basket with 2:54 to play that gave Caldwell its 58-55 advantage.

Derrin Boyd scored 15 points for the Tigers despite being the focus of a box-and-one defense by Webster. John Davis scored 13 points for Caldwell.

Webster County advances to the Section I semifinals on Saturday against Allen County-Scottsville. The semifinals of the 2A tourney will be played at Hopkins County Central.

Caldwell is off until Tuesday when the Tigers face Calloway County at the CAB gym.
