Christian County point guard DaMikeon Mathis returned from injury Saturday night against Jeffersontown, scoring 14 points and earning Player of the Game, while leading the host Colonels to a 75-57 victory in the nightcap of the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic. The Colonels rebound from a lopsided loss to UHA in their last outing to improve to 8-9 overall.
After a tight first quarter, Mathis scored on a drive and knocked down a 3-pointer with :15 left for 5 of his 7 first-quarter points and a 17-11 Colonel lead.
An 8-0 run, including 4 points from Stephon Bussell, gave the Colonels a 30-17 advantage with 3:00 left in the half, and they led by 11 at the halftime break.
Olajuwan White scored off an assist from Fred Tandy for the last bucket of a 10-4 spurt to give the Colonels’ their largest lead of the game at 45-25. However, the Chargers responded with an 11-2 run to force a Colonel timeout with 1:11 left in the quarter.
Jeffersontown’s Chris Trigg scored 9 third-quarter points, and he started the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 5 at 50-45. Tandy scored 8 of 10 points for the Colonels in a 10-0 tear to stretch the margin to 15 and seal the victory.
Trigg scored a game-high 18 to lead the Chargers, followed by Brandon Rayzer-Moore with 17.
Mathis and Eric Brody each finished with 14 for the Colonels, joined in double figures by Bussell with 13 and Tandy with 12. Olajuwon White chipped in 9.
