It appears the top three in the YSE Boys 2nd Region “Super 7” may be putting a little distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Madisonville has closed the gap just a bit on UHA, and Hoptown appears to be stalking the leaders just waiting for their opportunity to make a move. The final weeks of the season could be quite interesting.
1. UHA (15-3) – The Blazers dropped a tough game against Mayfield in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic, but did so without KJ Crump on the court. Ahead, the Blazers set their sights on Richmond and a deep run in the All A Classic. An interesting matchup with Lyon County on Friday night coming up.
2. Madisonville (12-5) – The Maroons have won five in a row, the last two of those being impressive wins over Caldwell County and Henderson County. And remember, they had UHA on the ropes earlier this season on the Blazers’ home court.
3. Hopkinsville (12-8) – Does anyone really want to have to face this team in the postseason. The Tigers have now won four in a row, but begin just a brutal six game stretch against Madison Central, Graves County, Manual, Henderson, Christian County, and UHA. They will be tested by tourney time, that is sure.
4. Christian County (9-10) – While the southern Colonels have a losing record, this is a team that will be dangerous down the stretch. So don’t let the wins and losses deceive you. Kerry Stovall will have this team ready come mid-February.
5. Henderson County (10-8) – The northern Colonels took one in the grill from Madisonville and from Castle. However, until someone can prove otherwise, Henderson is still a team that reached the regional semis last year. They also have a big district win over Webster County. A return match with the Trojans and two with Union County will tell us more about where this team stands.
6. Lyon County (12-6) – Gabe Board is back for the Lyons and looks to be near 100 percent after an injury to his knee earlier this season. The Lyons have won four in a row and have a shot at UHA Friday plus a rematch with Caldwell County, who they beat in the opener back in November.
7. Caldwell County (11-6) – The Tigers look like they are still trying to get their bearings after a big loss to Madisonville. They let one get away in the 2A Championships at Webster County. They did rebound with a nice win over Calloway County Tuesday night. Circle January 24, as they will get the chance to avenge an earlier loss to Lyon County.
