Caldwell County had two wrestlers reach the podium of the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament Saturday as Dylan Walls and Riley Johnson both finished in eighth place.

Johnson opened the day with a win over South Oldham’s Luke Oliveros 58 seconds into the second round. He worked his way into the podium round with a 6-2 decision over Oldham County’s Armstead before falling to Matthew Meyer of St. Xavier.

In the seventh place match, Johnson fell to Montgomery County’s Nolan Banfield 7-2. Johnson entered the state tournament ranked 15th in the 106-pound class by kentuckywrestling.com.

Dylan Walls got revenge for last week’s region tournament loss as he executed a late takedown of Christian County’s Ethan Wells to grab a 7-5 decision. He faced South Oldham’s Bryant Beane, the No. 4 wrestler in the state in the next round and fell late by a 5-2 score.

In the seventh place match, Walls could never get on track and lost to North Hardin’s Devon Herron 9-1. Walls’ finish put him on the podium for a second straight year. He entered the state tournament ranked No. 13 in his class.

Also Saturday, Seth Slayton dropped his consolation opener to Meade County’s Elijah McCune 16-9.

As a team, Caldwell County finished in 36th place with 27 points.
