Webster, Christian County Draw Into Same Region Tourney Bracket

A rematch of last year’s Second Region girls’ championship could happen in the semifinals following the draw Saturday morning. The tournament host is Crittenden County.

Fifth District champion Trigg County (16-15) will open play Wednesday at 6pm against Henderson County (15-8). The Lady Wildcats are making their first region tourney appearance since 2009. Their lone tourney win came in 1990.

Henderson County is 29-5 all-time in first round games and 63-20 in tournament history.

Wednesday will be the fourth meeting between the schools. Henderson County won the previous three – all in the region tourney. The last time they played was in 1996.

Wednesday at 7:30, Seventh District champion Madisonville (22-7) will play Hopkinsville (17-15). The Lady Maroons won their Jan. 3 matchup 52-43, but the Lady Tigers were without two starters that night.

Madisonville is 21-11 all-time in the first round of the region tourney, while Hopkinsville is 11-20. The Lady Tigers won their last region meeting 56-53 in overtime in 2017.

Thursday at 6pm, Eighth District champion Christian County (17-12) plays Lyon County (15-11) in their first region meeting since 2011 when the Lady Colonels edged the Lady Lyons 49-47 in the semifinals. That was also the last year Lyon County won a first round game.

Christian County is 24-12 all-time in the first round, while Lyon County is 3-24. The Lady Colonels score 53.5 points a game, while Lyon County gives up 34.6.

Christian County has been eliminated by Webster County the past two seasons, including a 45-32 loss in the region title game last year.

Thursday at 7:30pm, defending region champion Webster County (27-3) will play Caldwell County (13-15). Webster won their regular season matchup 65-30 as part of the Class 2A Championships.

The Lady Trojans have won 21 straight games against region competition and have won eight straight first round games. Caldwell’s last win in the first round came in 2014.

The semifinals will be played Monday, March 4 with the championship set for Tuesday, March 5 at 7pm at Crittenden County High School.
