Boys’ Second Region Semifinals to Feature Rematches

The Boys’ Second Region Tournament continues Friday night in Madisonville with a pair of rematches expected to pack the house.

In the 6pm opener, defending region champion University Heights Academy (29-4) squares off against Caldwell County (19-10). UHA had the easiest win in the quarterfinal round with an 84-42 victory over Crittenden County. Caldwell County survived a 67-64 contest with Union County for their first region tourney win in a dozen years.

The teams met on Feb. 12 in Hopkinsville with UHA holding on for a 96-91 win over the Tigers. Derrin Boyd had 43 points for Caldwell County, while Xavier signee Kyky Tandy had 40 points for the Blazers.

UHA is 9-3 all-time in region semifinal games, while Caldwell County is 2-9.

UHA has won four straight games against Caldwell County dating back to 2014. Their only meeting in the region tournament was a 48-46 Caldwell County win in the 1987 quarterfinals. Caldwell went on to lose to a Travis Ford-led Madisonville squad 55-47 in the region championship.

In the 7:30 nightcap, Madisonville (27-5) meets Henderson County (16-11). The Maroons won their 20th consecutive game with a 67-53 win over Christian County in the quarterfinals. Their 27 wins are the most for a Maroon team since their last region title team in 2001.

Henderson County advanced to the semifinals with a 75-65 win over Lyon County. The Colonels lost to Madisonville 82-67 Maroon on Jan. 12.

Madisonville is 22-25 in region semifinal games all-time, while Henderson County is 18-14.

Friday’s winners advance to Saturday’s 6pm championship game at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School.
