Hopkinsville didn’t advance out of the Eighth District this season, but they are the only Second Region team with two wins against teams in the Sweet 16.
Hopkinsville split a pair of games with Third Region champion Owensboro, winning 47-45 in the Owensboro Invitational and dropping the return match 72-46 Feb. 12 in Owensboro. Hoptown also came the closest to handing John Hardin their only loss of the season, falling 45-44 on late free throws in the championship game of the OIT.
Hoptown also lost to 12th Region champion Lincoln County 43-41.
The Tigers picked up a 51-49 win over Fourth Region champion Warren Central Jan. 8 on a game-saving blocked shot by Reece Jesse as time expired. Hoptown lost their only matchup with Madisonville 60-52 on Jan. 3.
Madisonville lost to Third Region champion Owensboro 71-57 back on Dec. 27 in the Meijer Holiday Classic in Bowling Green. That was the last loss for the Maroons, who have won 22 straight games since that loss. One of those wins was a 78-61 win over Owensboro on Jan. 22 in Madisonville.
UHA lost to First Region champion Mayfield 87-78 in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic Jan. 12 at Christian County. They also split a pair of games with Second Region champion Madisonville.
Christian County owns a win over Third Region champion Owensboro, knocking off the Red Devils 75-66 on Dec. 11. They lost to Madisonville twice.
Union County also lost to Owensboro, dropping a 72-56 decision in the season-opener Nov. 27.
Webster County lost to 13th Region champion Knox Central 65-59 in the Kentucky 2A Championships in Owensboro. They also lost to Madisonville 69-51.
In all, Second Region teams were 4-7 against other region winners.
Other Second Region teams with losses to Madisonville during the season were Lyon County (80-47), Caldwell County (three losses), Henderson County (twice), Hopkins County Central (twice), and Dawson Springs (three losses)
