A quick two-out rally by Lyon County in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed the Lyons to beat Trigg County 3-2 in 5th District baseball action Thursday in Eddyville. With the game knotted at 2-2, Lyon’s Gabe Board doubled to center. Travis Yancy followed with a single to right, chasing home Board with the go-ahead run.
Board then nailed down the victory on the mound. He pitched around an error in the top of the seventh inning and went the final four innings in relief of Yancy, the starter.
Board allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out four and walking one to get the pitching win. Yancy went the first three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. Yancy fanned two and walked none.
Lyon (3-0 overall, 1-0 district) struck first against the defending district champions, scoring twice in the home half of the second inning. Jake Klueppel reached on an error to start the frmae. Brody Williams followed with a double to center to put runners at second and third. Jackson Shoulders followed with another double, plating Klueppel and Williams to give Lyon the early 2-0 advantage.
Trigg (1-1, 0-1) got one run back in the top of the third when Wyatt Wagoner led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Hayden Cunningham. That trimmed the Lyon lead to 2-1.
Trigg tied the game in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Arlon Butts and Andrew Williamson to start the inning. The Wildcats had runners on the corners with one out, but failed to score again.
That left the door open for Lyon to grab the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Lyon was held to just five hits by Trigg hurlers Butts and Cunningham.
Board, Williams and Shoulders had doubles for the Lyons while Gunnar Bingham and Yancy each singled.
Trigg recorded seven hits, led by Jacob Kent, who went 2-for-3. Butts, Wagoner and Williamson each had a double while Riley Stallons and Jude Hunter each singled.
The teams are scheduled to meet again April 16 at the Trigg Recreation Complex.
