Webster County exacted a bit of revenge on Caldwell County for knocking them out of last year’s region softball tournament with a resounding 10-0 win over the Lady Tigers Monday in Dixon.
The Lady Trojans jumped ahead early with four runs in the first inning thanks to three hits and two Caldwell County errors.
Three walks, a wild pitch, and an error in the third inning helped Webster County score two more runs for a 6-0 lead.
Caldwell County had chances to dent the scoreboard but left nine runners on base. Liberty University signee Karlie Keeney continually pitched out of trouble, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
Lawna Ferrell came on in relief in the fourth inning and stranded a runner at third in the sixth inning.
Ferrell belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning as Webster County went on to end the game via the mercy rule.
Keeney and Ferrell combined to allow four hits and struck out five.
Caldwell County got four singles in the contest from Emma Staples, Katie Franklin, Allie Felker, and Karlie Rennison.
Franklin allowed 11 hits and struck out four. Six of the ten runs she allowed were unearned.
Webster County, ranked 21st in this week’s Coaches’ Poll, improved to 6-1 on the season, with the Lady Trojans scoring 10 or more runs in all six wins. Webster won 18 games a year ago, including a Sixth District title, but were beaten by Caldwell County 1-0 in the opening round of the region tournament.
Caldwell County is off to a 1-3 start, and it doesn’t get any easier Tuesday as they welcome in No. 9 Madisonville for a Seventh District contest.
