Trigg County starting a set of brothers on the baseball diamond is nothing new. Hayden and Bryce Cunningham join the Stallons, Terrell, and Brown brothers that have been started for the Wildcats over the past four years. On Tuesday, the Cunninghams had each other’s back as the Wildcats beat Crittenden County 16-6 to snap a three-game losing streak and even their district record at 1-1.
Bryce, a sophomore, picked up the win in his first varsity start. He labored a bit through six innings but allowed just three hits and one earned run. He struck out three and walked eight in getting the complete game.
Hayden, a junior, had two hits and five runs knocked in. He drove in a run with a groundout in the first inning and cleared the bases with a three-run double in the second inning. Cunningham also had an RBI single in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats struck early, scoring four times in the first and eight more times in the second inning. Crittenden stayed within striking distance with four runs in the second and two more in the third.
However, it wasn’t a well-played game. The teams combined for 12 errors (seven for Crittenden). That led to 15 unearned runs between them. There were also 14 walks issued in the contest.
But Trigg showed signs of breaking out of their hitting slump with 12 hits. Jude Hunter had three hits and three RBIs. Wyatt Wagoner and Riley Stallons also had two-hit days.
Crittenden County (4-2, 0-1) will host Livingston Central Thursday, while Trigg County (2-3, 1-1) will play host to the Cardinals on Friday.
