It certainly does not hurt to have two Division One signees in your starting rotation. For the second night in row, the Christian County Colonels sent one of their two to the mound in a game against their district rival, and crosstown rival, Hopkinsville Tigers. And, for the second night in a row, that starting pitcher pitched a gem.
Wyatt Stevenson, who has signed to play with the University of Louisville, limited Hopkinsville to just one hit and struck out 14, as Christian County picked up their second win in as many nights over the Tigers with a 5-0 victory.
Stevenson was especially dominant early, striking out nine over the first three innings. Hopkinsville’s only hit of the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Caleb Bapp led off the inning with a single. The Tigers threatened to score in the bottom of the 3rd and again in the bottom of the 4th, but each time Stevenson and the Colonels were able to slam the door.
Meanwhile, it took Hopkinsville a couple of innings to find its pitching groove, and that was enough time for the Colonels to score all the runs they would need in the contest. Hopkinsville starter Layne Jorgensen lasted only a third of an inning. First reviever Tim Cansler made it through 2/3 of an inning. The two were touched up for five runs, however, only two of the runs were earned. Preston Chaudoin entered the game in the second inning, and pitched six strong innings.
Chaudoin gave up no runs, on three hits, and struck out seven. But, with Stevenson in lockdown mode for Hopkinsville the damage had already been done.
Austin Fields ended up 1-2 for Christian County, with two runs scored. Wyatt Stevenson was 0-3, but drove in two of the Colonels’ five runs.
Christian County improves to 4-2 on the season, while Hopkinsville falls to 4-2 with their second straight loss.
