Five Local Wrestlers Help Team Kentucky Fare Well at Folkstyle Nationals

Several local wrestlers represented Kentucky at the USA Wrestling National High School Folkstyle Duals at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Team Kentucky had two teams – the Blue team and the White team.  The Blue team finished fourth in the Gold Pool.

Trigg County’s Colin Stevens finished 6-1 on the weekend, with his only loss coming to Trevor Swier, the Illinois 182-pound duals champion from Montini High School.

Christian County’s Niko Bussell also finished 6-1 on the weekend, wrestling in the 220-pound class. His only loss came to Brandon Hoselton of Prairie Central, Ill. High School – the two-time Illinois state champion in the 195-pound class.

Christian County’s Jakerion Merritt finished his weekend with a 5-2 record, with one of his losses coming 1-0.

After going 4-0 in pool play, Kentucky Blue beat Colorado 32-27 and Indiana 31-15 before dropping their final three matches to finish fourth.

Meanwhile, Kentucky’s White team won the Bronze Pool.

Caldwell County’s Dylan Walls wrestled in seven matches in the 120-pound division, winning three. One of his three wins came on a pin 12 seconds into the match against an opponent from Ohio.

Fort Campbell’s Jesus Avila wrestled in the 182-pound class and finished the weekend with a record of 2-5.

In the Bronze Pool, Kentucky White won all five matches to win first place.

The national event is open to wrestlers in grades 9-11.
