Caldwell County senior Katie Franklin took a no-hitter to the sixth inning of Tuesday’s 7th District game at Hopkins County Central. The Lady Tiger senior had to settle for a complete-game four-hitter as Caldwell claimed a 10-3 decision in Mortons Gap.
Hopkins Central (6-11 overall, 1-2 district) strung together three-straight doubles in the home half of the sixth inning while scoring three times and getting as close as 5-3.But Caldwell (7-9, 2-1), put together a five-run seventh inning to put the game away. Franklin struck out 10 and walked three in the contest.
Meanwhile, Caldwell’s offense got on the scoreboard when Emma Staples led off the third inning with a home run to centerfield. Mashea Glover and Franklin followed with consecutive doubles to plate another run and make it 2-0. Caldwell scored three times in the top of the fifth to make it 5-0. Madi Choate and Majah Hollowell each had RBI singles in that frame.
The Lady Storm made things interesting with their three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth.
However, Caldwell slammed the door shut in the seventh. Karlie Rennison doubled in the first run of the inning. Glover later added a two-run double, then scored on Franklin’s single to give the Lady Tigers a 10-3 cushion.
Franklin finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs while Glover was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in and three runs scored. Madi Choate was 3-for-4 and knocked in a run. Rennison and Hollowell each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Lady Tigers’ 15-hit attack.
Caldwell, which has won five of its last six games, is now off the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers will next visit Madisonville-North Hopkins on Monday.
