Four different players slammed home runs for Lyon County, which built a 7-0 lead and held on for an 8-6 triumph over Hopkinsville on Monday in Eddyville.
It was Lyon’s 10th straight win.
Gabe Board homered to left field with one out in the bottom of the first to give the Lyons (14-5) an early 1-0 lead.
Jake Klueppel had a solo home run leading off the second for Lyon, but the Lyons weren’t done in the frame. Christian O’Daniel and Brady Darnell each singled with one out, then Gunnar Bingham homered to right to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
Travis Yancy had an RBI single and another run scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to give Lyon its 7-0 edge.
But Hopkinsville (10-6) refused to go quietly, and got back in the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. John Duvall singled home two runs in the frame while Caleb Bapp had an RBI single as Hoptown cut Lyon’s lead to 7-3.
Lyon picked up an extra run in the bottom of the sixth when Jackson Shoulders homered to left with two outs to make it 8-3.
But Hopkinsville put its first two batters on base in the top of the seventh when Ryan Myers and Bapp each singled. Layne Jorgensen then slammed a home run to center to make it 8-6, still with no outs in the inning.
However, Board, who came on in the fifth inning in relief of starter Austin Long, struck out the next two batters, then got a ground ball back to the mound to end the contest.
Long got the win on the mound, allowing three runs on five base hits. He struck out three and walked two in 4.2 innings. Board tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out three and walking none.
Hoptown starter Preston Chaudoin went the first three innings and suffered the loss.
Bingham led the Lyon offense, going 2-for-4 and driving in three. Yancy went 3-for-4 and drive in a run. Shoulders was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Darnall was 2-for-3 with a double.
Jorgensen finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for Hopkinsville. Bapp was 2-for-3 for the Tigers with an RBI while Myers went 2-for-4.
