After being an out away from a fifth-inning mercy-rule win, the Todd County Central Rebels had to hold on for a 16-12 victory Wednesday night at Fort Campbell, as the Falcons put up 10 runs in their final three at-bats to make things interesting. The Rebels win their second-straight to improve to 4-7 overall, while the Falcons drop their fourth in a row to slip to 3-14 on the year.
First-inning RBI singles by Clayte Weathers and Bryce Nolan gave the Rebels a 3-0 advantage, and Weathers worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Falcons off the board in the bottom of the inning.
Weathers was in control on the mound, allowing a single hit through three frames, and the Rebels erupted for 9 runs in the top of the fourth for a commanding 12-0 lead. The Falcons broke through in the bottom of the inning, drawing three walks ahead of a Dylan Johnson single that scored two.
The Rebels took an 11-run advantage into the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons extended the game on back-to-back doubles and an RBI by Kevin Rhodd to make the score 13-4. Both teams scored 3 in the sixth leaving Fort Campbell trailing 16-7 with three outs left.
A Rebel error and a hit-by-pitch put the Falcons in business, followed by an RBI single by Johnson. Tyler MacKay drove in a run with a long single and came home on a triple by Matt Middleton. Ryan Sawyer kept the rally going with an RBI single to pull the Falcons to within 4 runs, but after a Kevin Rhodd double put runners on second and third, Todd County’s Austin Rager took the mound and threw three pitches to strike-out Ethan Stanco and end the game.
MacKay took the loss on the mound for the Falcons, working 3.0 innings and allowing 8 runs on 8 hits with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. MacKay and Johnson each had 3 hits and 3 RBI, followed by Middleton with 2 hits and 2 driven-in and Sawyer at 2-2 with an RBI.
Weathers pitched into the sixth for the win, striking-out 10 and walking 6 while allowing 7 runs on 7 hits. Weathers was one of two Rebels with 3 RBI, joining Tanner Farmer, followed by Rager at 3-5 with 2 RBI and Dylan Hurt with a couple of hits and an RBI.
