Colonels Look to Right Ship as 8th District Tourney Opens

Christian County’s path to repeat as Second Region baseball champion has been a rough and curvy one as the postseason gets underway Monday.  The Colonels (14-14) have had to battle injuries and inconsistent play that has seen them drop seven of eight games entering the district tournament.

However, they can shed those ills with another deep postseason run, which begins at 5:30 Monday with an Eighth District semifinal contest with Fort Campbell at University Heights Academy’s Simmons Field.

Christian County was able to win some key district games early and nail down the top seed in the tournament.  They easily swept Fort Campbell (4-15) during the regular season with wins of 18-2 and 12-2.  Christian County owns a 30-plus game winning streak over the Falcons and boast one of, if not, the best pitching rotations in the region.

Fort Campbell is 2-6 since Alberto Gonzalez took over as head coach on April 27.  They will be looking to win their first district title since 1990.

In the 7:30 nightcap, University Heights Academy (17-13) plays Hopkinsville (17-12).  The Blazers enter the postseason having won six in a row and seven of their last eight games.  They dropped both regular season games to Hopkinsville by identical 9-1 scores.

Hoptown won seven of eight games in late April and early May but have dropped five straight coming into district tournament play.

Monday’s winners will play in the district championship game Tuesday at 7pm at UHA.
