Lyon County enters the postseason with the most baseball wins in the Second Region, with their 22 wins also setting a new school record. In a district where seeding hasn’t mattered in recent years, you will have to excuse Lyons’ Coach Ricky Baker if he doesn’t approach this week’s Fifth District Tournament with over confidence.
The Lyons are the top seed in a district that hasn’t treated the No. 1 seed well. Each of the last three years, Crittenden County has used their No. 4 seed to score an upset over the top seed. One of those upsets was over Lyon County two years ago.
Lyon County was 5-1 in district play, with that one loss coming to a Crittenden County team that sits in the No. 3 spot for a change. The Lyons will play No. 4 seed and defending district champion Trigg County Monday at 5:30 at Livingston Central’s Fairgrounds Park.
The Lyons edged Trigg County in a pair of games during the season, winning 3-2 and 10-7. The Lyons would love nothing more than to exact some revenge on a Wildcat team that used a walk-off grand slam to beat them 4-0 in last year’s semifinals.
Trigg County (14-14) has been up and down in Coach Tyler Magan’s first season at the helm of the Wildcats. Bad losses to Crittenden County and Livingston Central dropped them to the No. 4 seed. The Wildcats have alternated wins and losses over the past six games, with one of those a 5-4 win over defending region champion Christian County.
Lyon County hasn’t won a district title since 1997 and will be looking to advance to their first district championship game since 2015.
In the nightcap, No. 2 seed Livingston Central (10-13) will host No. 3 seed Crittenden County (17-15) at 7:30. The Cardinals swept the season series from the Rockets with wins of 8-4 and 8-1. The second win was a one-hit shutout by Cardinal ace Cameron Head, who has battled a quad injury throughout the season. Livingston is looking for their second district title in three seasons.
The Rockets have won 17 games for the first time since 2010 when they won 18 games and the district title – the last Crittenden team to win a district title. The Rockets have won four of six games entering the postseason.
Monday’s winners will meet in Tuesday’s championship game at 6pm and both advance to the Second Region Tournament next week at Union County.
