Storylines Abound in 5th District Softball Tournament

The Fifth District Softball Tournament features a variety of storylines that could see any one of four teams take home the championship trophy from Livingston Central this week.

Lyon County is the top seed after a 5-1 trip through the district on their way to a 22-12 overall record.  They saw their five-game winning streak snapped over the weekend with losses to South Oldham and No. 14 Ballard.

The Lady Lyons play the host team Livingston Central Monday at 5:30.  The Lady Cardinals (14-10) do not have any juniors or seniors on their roster.  Despite a winless district record, Livingston enters the postseason winners of four of their last five games.  They were beaten by Lyon County 12-2 and 12-0 during the season.

The 7:30 nightcap features Trigg County (16-15) and Crittenden County (16-13) in a rematch of last year’s district championship game won by the Lady Rockets.

The Lady Wildcats feature one of the region’s top pitchers in Hannah Colbert, who has topped 200 strikeouts for the second straight year.  Trigg County has needed her dominance in the circle down the stretch as their offense has scored just two runs in their last four games.

The Lady Rockets have no such trouble scoring, averaging nine runs a game.  However, Colbert shut the Lady Rockets down in a 10-2 win April 23.  That came after Crittenden scored an 11-1 win over Colbert and the Lady Rockets a month earlier.

Trigg County has never won a district title since softball switched to fast pitch in 1995.

Monday’s winners advance to Tuesday’s 6pm championship game and a trip to the region tournament next week at Webster County.
