Here is a team by team breakdown of the Second Region Field.
Caldwell County (16-15) – The Tigers saw their seven-year district title streak end with a 5-1 loss to Madisonville this week…..Caldwell saw their two-year region championship streak end at the hands of Union County in the first round last year….Caldwell is 10-9 against region teams and 3-9 against the tourney field. The three wins were against Christian County, Crittenden County, and Hopkinsville…..The Tigers are batting .347 as a team and averaging 7.3 runs per game…..Sophomore Tate VanHooser leads Caldwell with a .462 batting average and nine home runs…..Caldwell County has not lost consecutive first round games in the region tourney since 2010-11.
Union County (23-13) – The Braves got hot at the end of the season and defeated Henderson County 12-5 to win their first district title since 2014….The Braves enter the region tourney winners of 10-of-12 games and five straight…..Union County has advanced to the region championship game the past three seasons, losing all three. Their last region title came in 2014…..Lindsey Wilson signee Cade Duncan is batting .393, while Coy Burns (Southeastern Illinois College) is hitting .371. On the mound, Duncan is 8-1 with a 1.32 ERA, with Burns posting a 3-3 record and 2.30 ERA…..Union County pitchers have struck out 264 batters in 234 innings and posted a 2.33 ERA….Union County is 12-4 against teams in the region and 6-3 against the tourney field. Two of the three losses came to Henderson County, while the other came to Madisonville.
Christian County (16-14) – The Colonels wrapped up their fifth straight district title with an 11-7 win over rival Hopkinsville…..It was their third win over the Tigers this year…..The defending region champions are 11-5 against teams in the region and 4-4 against the tourney field. The have two losses to Henderson County and one each to Madisonville and Caldwell County…..University of Louisville signee Wyatt Stevenson is hitting .410 and has a 5-3 record on the mound with a 1.56 ERA….Western Kentucky signee Lane Diuguid appears healthy at the right time for the Colonels. He has not allowed an earned run in 24 innings pitched and has 40 strikeouts….The Colonels are looking to win consecutive region titles since winning three straight in 2004-06.
Crittenden County (18-16) – The Rockets are the 5th District runner-up after losing to Lyon County in the district championship…..The 18 wins by Crittenden are the most since 2010….The Rockets have lost eight straight first round games dating back to a 5-4 win over Hopkins County Central in 2009…..The Rockets were 13-12 against region teams in 2018, including a 2-7 record against the tourney field. Their two wins were over Lyon County and Caldwell County…..Crittenden never won more than four straight games or lost three straight at any point in the season…..Caden McCalister leads the Rockets with a .426 batting average…..Crittenden County has never won a region title.
Madisonville (20-14) – The Maroons’ third win over Caldwell County this year was a 5-1 win in the 7th District championship, ending Caldwell’s seven-year run atop the district….Madisonville enters the region tournament winners of 8-of-11 games….Madisonville was 15-7 against region teams and 8-5 against the tournament field. The Maroons beat Crittenden County twice, as well as Hopkinsville and Christian County….Madisonville lost to Henderson County 13-10 in last year’s region first round. They have lost five of their last six first round games….Madisonville’s last first round win came over Trigg County in 2016….Senior pitcher Alex Gray is 9-2 on the mound with a 1.45 ERA, while junior Jon Hogart is batting an even .500 this year with three homers and 34 RBIs…..Madisonville will be looking to reach the championship game for the first time since 2003. The Maroons’ last region title came in 1979.
Hopkinsville (18-13) – The Tigers finished runner-up to Christian County in the 8th District with an 11-7 loss to the Colonels…..Hoptown is 10-8 against region teams and 3-8 against the tourney field. Their wins came against Madisonville, Henderson County, and Caldwell County…..The Tigers have dropped six of seven games entering the region tournament…..John Duvall leads the Tigers at the plate with a .411 batting average…..Freshman Preston Chaudoin has come on late to be a reliable starter. He is 4-1 with a 2.10 ERA, including a win over University Heights in the district semifinals…..Hoptown’s last win in the region tournament was a 6-2 victory over Henderson County in the 2015 opening round, which was also the same year of their last region title.
Lyon County (24-10) – The Lyons won their first district title in 23 years with a 7-0 shutout of Crittenden County in the 5th District championship game…..Their 24 wins are the most of any team in the region this season…..The Lyons were 17-3 against region teams with the three losses coming to Henderson County, Crittenden County, and tournament host Union County…..Lyon County is 8-3 against the tourney field…..Lyon County is making their first region tourney appearance since an 8-0 loss to Caldwell County in 2015…..Lyon County’s last win in the region tournament came in 1987 against Union County…..Lindsey Wilson signee Gabe Board is batting .400 with four home runs, and freshman Jackson Shoulders is batting .324 with four homers and is 5-2 on the mound with a 3.00 ERA.
Henderson County (20-15) – The Colonels saw their four-year stay atop the 6th District end with a 12-5 loss to Union County, a team they had swept during the regular season….Henderson was 9-5 against teams in the region this year and 8-4 against the region field….The Colonels split two games with Madisonville and two games with Lyon County while sweeping two from Christian County….Henderson County is batting .322 as a team with 18 home runs….Ian Pitt (.340) has six of the team’s homers, while Jake Murdach (.375) has five. Murdach has signed with Frontier College, while Pitt is headed to Eastern Kentucky to play football…..Henderson has won three straight first round games dating back to a 2015 loss to Hopkinsville…..The Colonels last won a region baseball title in 2013.
