Lyon County Post 68 Claims Back-to-Back State Titles

Lyon County Post 68 slammed three home runs while rolling to a 13-3 win over Owensboro Post 9 on Saturday to win the American Legion state championship for the second straight season.

The Post 68 Aces went a perfect 4-0 in the state tourney for the second year in a row while claiming back-to-back titles. Lyon County advances to American Legion Regional action Aug. 7-11 in Charleston, Ill.

Drew Cooper was 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and four runs batted in for Post 68, which built a 5-0 lead early and never trailed against the Owensboro Bombers.

Colbe Crim was 2-for-3 with a double and a homer while Davis Corbett also went yard and finished 1-for-2 and knocked in three.

Gabe Board went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Owensboro tried to make a game of it in the top of the third inning by scoring three times. That cut the Post 68 advantage to 5-3.

But Lyon County (15-5-1) countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, then put up four more runs in the sixth to end the game early on the 10-run mercy rule on its home field at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.

Cade Duncan went the distance on the mound for Post 68. He allowed two earned runs on six base hits. Duncan struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

The American Legion Great Lakes Regional Tournament will be played at Eastern Illinois University. The Kentucky champs will play the Pennsylvania runner-up in Game 1 of the event at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
