Offensive struggles and a couple of defensive breakdowns were the undoing of the Fort Campbell Falcons Friday night. The Falcons fell to the Webster County Trojans 20-7 in a four quarter, running clock scrimmage at Fort Campbell.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for most of the first half. The Trojans finally found the endzone on the final play of the first half when Mason Wilson connected with Ayden Winn from 16 yards out to give Webster County a 7-0 halftime lead.

Webster County scored again on its first possession of the second half. Again, it was Wilson to Winn, this time from one yard out, as the Trojans extended the lead to 14-0. The score was set up on a long pass from Wilson to Daniel Yates.

The Falcons found paydirt early in the 4th quarter. Quarterback Matt Middleton scrambled out to the right and found Jordan Edwards for a tiptoe catch in the end zone to make it 14-7 with 10 minutes left.

Webster County then drove down the field and closed out the scrimmage win when Wilson connected with Hayden Nunn from 15 yards away to make it 20-7.

The scrimmage came to a bit of an abrupt end after Falcons’ quarterback Matt Middleton, who was wearing a red “no tackle” jersey, was hit high and late along the Falcon sideline after a pass attempt. Tempers flared a bit, and coaches decided to quickly close out the scrimmage.

Fort Campbell had 57 yards rushing and 70 passing for a total of 127. Webster County only rushed for 23 yards but got to the Falcons over the top with 178 passing yards for a total of 201.

One of the bright spots for Fort Campbell was the play of Jordan Edwards, who caught five passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.

The Falcons will travel to Clinton County next Friday for their final preseason scrimmage, and then open the season August 23 at home against Crittenden County.
