In a football game that featured 34 penalty flags, 369 penalty yards, four ejections, and took over three hours to play, Trigg County scored 35 unanswered points to defeat Fort Campbell 51-14 Friday night at Perdue Field.
It marked the first time in the 46-game series that Trigg County has scored 50 points against Fort Campbell. It was the third straight win for the Wildcats over the Falcons.
Trigg quarterback Cam Jordan threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 139 yards and four more scores. The U.S. Naval commit factored in Trigg’s first two touchdowns. He scored from four yards out with 9:18 left in the opening quarter and completed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Kion Thompson on their next drive for a 14-0 Wildcat lead.
Fort Campbell bounced right back as Falcon quarterback Matthew Middleton completed a 22-yard pass to Jordan Edwards to cut the Trigg lead in half at 14-7.
Trigg added a safety with 6:10 left in the half when Middleton was sacked in the end to grab a 16-7 lead.
The Middleton-to-Edwards connection proved to be successful again, this time from 26 yards out with 4:30 left in the half. Trigg’s lead was trimmed to 16-14. Edwards finished with three catches for 62 yards.
Jordan connected with Thompson on a 29-yard scoring strike inside the final minute of the half for a 23-14 lead. Thompson led the Wildcat receivers with three catches for 70 yards. Tayshaun Barker added three receptions for 63 yards.
The Trigg County quarterback scored on three runs in a third quarter marred by chippyness. Three Falcon players and one Wildcat were ejected at different points for unsportsmanlike conduct. Those four players will miss their team’s next two games as a result.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Cade Bleidt picked off Middleton and returned it 37 yards for the final score of the game. The Fort Campbell signal caller was 9-of-26 passing for 119 yards.
Trigg County outgained Fort Campbell in total yardage 362-213 and in penalty yards 201-168. Trigg was flagged 18 times while the Falcons were called for 16 penalties.
Fort Campbell (0-2) will travel to Todd County Central Friday. The Rebels made the trip to Fort Knox only to have their game canceled when no game officials showed up to call the game.
Trigg County is 2-0 for the first time since 2011 and will travel to Calloway County Friday.
