The KHSAA has released a Ratings Performance Index (RPI) for boys’ soccer for the first time, even though it will not factor into postseason seeding like it will for football this season.
The RPI formula takes into account win-loss records plus opponents’ win-loss records, and opponents’ opponents’ win-loss records. Teams get one point for a win, 0.5 points for a tie and zero points for a loss
The RPI numbers on the KHSAA scoreboard site came with the following disclaimer – “RPI is updated hourly. Teams missing scores at that time are not included. This experimental, not official, currently under development, subject to revision and must be regarded with skepticism this early in the season.”
Henderson County tops the first boys’ RPI in the Second Region followed by Madisonville. Hopkinsville, which hasn’t lost a game to a region opponent in nearly four years, is ranked third. Trigg County is fourth, and University Heights is fifth.
While football has had statewide computer rankings in the past from the Louisville (Litkenhous) and Lexington (Cantrell) newspapers, soccer has just recently had the Maher Computer Rankings. None of them are associated with the KHSAA.
It’s not clear why the KHSAA decided to release the RPI for each school if they are not planning to use it to determine postseason seeding. However, it is certain to generate some discussion.
