University Heights Academy will face the state’s top scoring team in the first round of the Girls’ All-A Classic State Tournament Saturday in Frankfort.
Prestonsburg is 12-1 after beating West Carter 11-1 in Saturday’s All-A sectional. The Lady Blackcats, champions of the 15th Region, have scored 117 goals while allowing just 11. Freshman Anna Burchett has scored 59 goals on the season and averages 4.5 goals a game by herself. Makayla Ousley has scored 21 goals and assisted in 25 others.
Their only loss was a 7-5 setback to unbeaten Ashland Blazer on Aug. 29. That was one of only three games against a team with a winning record. The Lady Blackcats are making their third state tourney appearance in four years. Their only first round win came last year.
University Heights (6-2-2) has shut out their last two opponents and have pitched five shutouts this year. The Lady Blazers have allowed 11 goals in 10 games this year and haven’t had more than three scored on them in any game.
UHA’s last appearance in the state tourney was a 3-2 loss to Bethlehem in 2013.
According to a new experimental Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) formula released on the KHSAA website Sunday, Prestonsburg’s RPI is 0.642 – a half-point higher than UHA’s 0.592. The formula will take into account win-loss records plus opponents’ win-loss records, and opponents’ opponents’ win-loss records. Teams get one point for a win, 0.5 points for a tie and zero points for a loss
UHA will play Prestonsburg Saturday morning at 9:00 (ET) at Capital View Park in Frankfort. If they win, they will play in the semifinals at 6:00 Saturday.
