Trigg County shook off 17 straight losses to start the volleyball season and put together a complete match in downing Union County in straight sets Tuesday at Wildcat Gym. Trigg County won 25-23, 25-17, 25-16.
Trigg trailed 17-10 in the first set and 20-17 before surging to the lead behind the serving of Hannah Fletcher. The Lady Wildcat junior served four straight winners, including a pair of aces to give Trigg the lead. Tied at 22, Trigg scored three of the final four points for the win.
The second set was tied at 7-7 when Megan Hicks served a pair of aces to begin a 6-1 Trigg run. Trigg led by as many as nine points in the set and overcame some shaky serving down the stretch to go up 2-0.
There was little drama in the third set as Trigg County jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Union got as close as 15-11 but couldn’t mount a run thanks to six service errors in the set. Morgan Hicks had all three of her aces for Trigg County in the third set. The Lady Wildcats closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third set.
While Trigg struggled with their serve at the end of the second set, they had 22 aces in the match. Fletcher and Jesse Siegmund each had four aces, while Iyanna Grubbs, McKenzie Hecht, and the Hicks sisters each had three. Grubbs and Hecht each had three kills for Trigg, and Courtney Leudenberg added two.
Trigg County will look to make it two straight wins Thursday when they travel to Calloway County looking to avenge a Sept. 10 loss at Wildcat Gym.
