A veteran of Kentucky High School baseball has been named the new Todd County Central baseball coach. Greg Shelton, who most recently coached in Kentucky at Christian County, will begin his 44th season coaching baseball in Elkton in 2020.
Shelton has an overall coaching record of 984-484, which most of those wins coming at Franklin-Simpson from 1976-2004. The 29 seasons, the Wildcats won 678 games along with one state championship, two sectional titles, and six region championships. Shelton was twice named Kentucky’s coach of the year.
Shelton also had coaching stops at Beech, Tenn., Russellville, and Christian County. As coach of the Colonels in 2015-16, Christian County went 52-23 and won two district championships. The Colonels advanced to the region title game in 2016, losing to Hopkinsville.
He most recently served as head coach at South Fort Myers High School in Florida before returning to Kentucky.
“We are excited about this challenge and look forward to trying to move this program forward with the help from school support and community boosters,” Shelton said in a media release from the school.
Shelton will be the fifth coach in five seasons for the Rebels, who were 5-11 last season under coach Troy Winders. Shelton’ task will be to win the school’s first district tournament game since 2004 which was also Todd County Central’s last district championship season.
