Christian County’s Hannah Sumner overcame the rare late September heat and the terrain of the Central City County Club to claim a top 10 finish at the Girls’ Region 2 Golf Tournament Monday and earn a trip to next week’s state tournament.
Sumner shot a 12-over 83 to finish tied for 8th place. She claimed the next-to-last qualifying spot for the state tournament that will be held at the Bowling Green Country Club next week. Sumner shot a 40 on the back nine, which was her first nine holes. She shot a 43 on the second nine holes.
She is the first Christian County girls’ golfer to qualify for the state tournament since Rachel Diuguid won the region title in 2006.
Bridget Owens shot an 86 and just missed qualifying for the state tournament by two shots. She finished tied for 13th place.
Owensboro Catholic’s Emma Payne repeated as region champion with a round of 75, which was one shot better than Apollo’s Macey Brown.
Madisonville claimed the team title.
