Hoptown Finding Offense Down the Stretch, Hands Trigg 4-1 Loss

After scoring 26 goals in their first 15 games of the soccer season, Hopkinsville has scored 23 during their current five-match winning streak. The Tigers scored four goals for the third time in five games as they won 4-1 at Trigg County Wednesday.

Hoptown got out of the gate quickly as a Trigg County foul in the goalbox 30 seconds into the match gave Tyler Greenwell a penalty kick opportunity. He banged home the chance for a quick 1-0 Tiger lead.

Greenwell scored his second goal just four minutes later off a Welby Horn helper.

Trigg County, playing without their leading scorer for a second straight game (red card), didn’t get many offensive chances but did cash in with a penalty kick chance in the 16th minute. Keller Nichols scored to bring the Wildcats to within 2-1.

That score appeared to hold heading into halftime. Xavier Bussell, whose booming kicks from goalie position help the Tigers flip the field, set another kick into orbit in the final minute of the half. Greenwell was able to control it and knock home his third goal to complete the hat trick. Bussell’s assist was his third of the season – all from the goalie position.

Zach Bryant completed the scoring for Hopkinsville when he scored off a Steven Hermosillo pass for his fourth goal of the season.

The Tiger defense did the rest, holding Trigg County to three shots on the night. Bussell and Manny Martinez each had a save for Hoptown. Matthew Smith had eight saves for Trigg County.

The Wildcats fall to 13-2-2 on the season. Trigg is 0-10-2 against Hopkinsville in their last 12 meetings dating back to 2010. Trigg closes out the regular season Thursday at Mayfield.

Hopkinsville (12-7-1) will host Greenwood Saturday afternoon at the Stadium of Champions.
