A large crowd turned out at Tiger Stadium in Princeton for a Class 2A Top 10 showdown on Hall of Fame Night. But Mayfield took control of the contest in the second quarter and went on to thump Caldwell County 45-7 in the 1st District contest.
Mayfield, ranked second in the state, led just 14-7 after one quarter. But the Cardinals outscored Caldwell 21-0 in the second period to get to halftime with a 35-7 advantage.
Caldwell, ranked fifth by the Associated Press, was able to move the ball at times, but was unable to generate many stops when Mayfield had the ball.
On nine possessions in the contest, the Cardinals scored seven times. Only a Caldwell interception and the end of the game slowed down the Mayfield offense.
Caldwell, now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the district, had some hope early. DeEric Hollowell scored on a 3-yard run to tie things at 7-7 late in the first quarter.
Hollowell went on to rush for 124 yards for Caldwell.
However, Mayfield’s Kylan Galbreath ran for 224 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown run just before halftime that took much of the wind out of Tiger Stadium.
The run was the longest ever in a Caldwell game — by either a Tiger or the opposition — breaking a 97-yard TD run by Caldwell’s Jerrold Fuqua in a 1997 win over Marshall County.
Jayden Stinson passed for 205 yards and three touchdowns for the Cardinals (6-1, 2-0), who finished the night with 512 yards of offense.
Caldwell had 264 yards of offense.
Ben Holt led the Tiger defense with 12 tackles. Baron Wells had an interception.
Caldwell plays another Class 2A 1st District foe next week when Fort Campbell travels to Princeton.
