When you are the favorite in a match, one of the last things you want to do is let the opponent hang around in a tight match and begin to believe that they have a chance to pull off the upset. The Hopkinsville Tigers took care of business early in their district semifinal match against Christian County Monday evening and picked up the 4-0 win that move them on to the district championship Tuesday night.
The Tigers broke through just 8 minutes into the match when Welby Horn passed to Jose Favela coming down the left side. Favela then sent a pass to right in front of the goal where Zach Bryant headed it into the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
At the 22:00 mark it was Bryant with the header again. This time it was Mason Marschand with the throw in from the left side, getting it right in front of the goal, where Bryant was waiting in a crowd to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
From there it was Mason Rye time. At the 26:00 mark, Rye drilled a shot from about 30 yards out to extend the Tiger lead to 3-0. Three minutes later Rye broke clear and drilled a shot to make it 4-0 at the 29:00 mark. The first half would end with the Tigers holding the four goal lead.
The second half saw the Hoptown defense do what it needed to preserve the win. Limiting the number of scoring chances for the Colonels, and stopping the ones that did arise.
The win, which was Hopkinsville’s 6th in a row, moves the Tigers to 14-7-1, and into the 8th District championship game Tuesday evening against University Heights.
Christian County sees their seeason end at 3-17-2.
