When you are trying to pull off an upset of a highly ranked football team on their home field, most of the time it takes a near perfect performance. The Christian County Colonels did not get that perfect performance Friday night at Bowling Green. The Purples flexed their collective muscles as they rolled to a 49-0 win over the Colonels in a district battle in Bowling Green.
Christian County had five turnovers in the contest. Two of those came right after the Colonels had forced the Purples into a turnover of their own, thus negating Christian County getting a chance to cut into the Bowling Green lead.
The Purples defense was stout, to say the least. Bowling Green came up with seven sacks on the night. The shutout by the Purples was their third in their last five games, and the fourth time they have held an opponent to three points or less.
The turnovers got started early for the Colonels. On their first possession of the game, Donta Abren was picked off at the Bowling Green 35 yard line. Bowling Green was unable to take advantage of the mistake, fumbling the ball, with Christian County’s Niko Bussell coming up with the recovery. Just five plays later the Colonels fumbled the ball away, with the Purples recovering at their own 35.
Bowling Green then began an 8 play, 65 yard drive that was capped off when Jayvan Collins ran it in from 7 yards out to put the Purples up 7-0 with 2:52 to go in the first. After a short 24 yard punt on Christian County’s next possession, Bowling Green was back in business again. This time it took the Purples only two plays to go 57 yards, the last 45 coming on a pass from Conner Cooper to Elvin FoFanah to extend the lead to 14-0 with 9:45 to go in the half.
Their very next possession the Purples hit paydirt again. This time a 6 play, 53 yard drive was finished with a 27 yard touchdown pass from Cooper to Jordan Dingle to make it 21-0 with 6:25 in the half. The Christian County offense, which struggled all night to get a sustained drive going, had to punt again just over a minute later, giving the Purples offense another opportunity.
However, Steven Bussell came up with a big interception three plays later, seemingly closing the door on Bowling Green for the half. But, Christian County, which was its own worst enemy at times during the game fumbled the ball right back to the Purples on the very next play from the line of scrimmage, with Bowling Green recovering at the Colonels’ four yard line. Bowling Green scored the very next play on a four yard run from Scotty Brown on a jet sweep to extend the lead to 28-0 headed into the break.
On the first play of the second half, Bowling Green fumbled the ball, with the Colonels returning it back to the Purples six yard line. But, typical of the Christian County evening, it just was not meant to be. The Colonels lost 15 on a fumble, had an incomplete pass, and then turned the ball over on an interception.
The Purples took over on their own 15 yard line and promptly went on a 10 play, 85 yard drive, finished off with a four yard run from Conner Cooper to make it 35-0.
Christian County then went three and out on their next possession. Bowling Green special teams then came up with a big play as they blocked the punt and recovered it on the Colonels’ six yard line. The Purples would then score on a fourth down run from Evan Spader to make it 42-0 and activate the running clock.
The Bowling Green reserves would add a touchdown early in the 4th quarter to make it 49-0.
The Purples improve to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in district play.
Christian County falls to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the district. The Colonels will return home next Friday night to close out district play against South Warren.
