Lindsey Wilson College junior running back Jaylen Boyd, a Caldwell County grad, rushed for 73 yards and caught four passes for 31 yards as the Blue Raiders improved to 10-0 on Saturday.
No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson captured the program’s third divisional title with a 24-21 win over host and No. 8 Cumberlands (Ky.).
Boyd, who is the second-leading rusher in Caldwell County history, entered Saturday’s game ranking second in the MSC for all-purpose yards per game (144.6).
The Blue Raiders (10-0, 7-0 in the Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division) wrapped up the program’s second perfect regular season with the win and earn an automatic bid into the NAIA Football Championship Series which begins next Saturday.
J.T. Lyon stopped Josiah Robbins short of the first down on a botched field goal attempt to preserve the three-point win. The Patriots (9-1, 6-1) rushed their field goal unit onto the field inside the final 2 minutes trailing by three. With no timeouts, a low snap forced Robbins to try to run for the first down, but the Blue Raider defense stopped him three yards short of the marker to secure the title.
The Blue Raiders took advantage of three Cumberlands’ turnovers in the game, scoring 14 points off the Patriots miscues. The Lindsey Wilson defense owns 31 takeaways this season. The Blue Raiders lead the NAIA with a +23 turnover margin.
Lindsey Wilson adds the 2019 crown to its 2014 and 2017 titles. LWC will host a playoff game next Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium. Pairings are scheduled to be announced on Sunday at 6 p.m.
