The Lyon County Lyons picked up their first 5th-District win of the season on Friday night in Eddyville, building a big early lead and cruising to a 65-46 victory over the visiting Crittenden County Rockets. The Lyons improve to 3-2 overall ahead of a match-up with Carlisle County on Saturday at the Organ Donor Shootout at McCracken County. The Rockets slip to 0-2 in district play, 2-2 overall.
Jackson Shoulders and Gunnar Bingham scored 4 points each to give the Lyons an 8-0 lead, and they went on to lead 21-7 after the first quarter.
Two Nick Whalin free throws with 3:49 left in the second quarter gave the Lyons a 21-point edge. In the final minute of the half, Bingham stole the ball and scored on a layup, followed by a Travis Perry lay-in and a Shoulders drive and score at the buzzer to take a 40-13 advantage to the locker room.
It was more of the same after the break, with the difference ballooning to 30 on two free throws from Whalin with 1:25 left in the third. Perry scored 10 points in the quarter and the Lyons led 54-26 going to the fourth.
Perry hit a 3-pointer to start the quarter, followed by a bucket down low from Shoulders for what would be the largest lead of the game at 59-26. For the Rockets, Gabe Mott scored 8 of his team-high 20 over the final 8 minutes, with Erik O’Leary chipping in 7 of his 11 to outscore Lyon 20-11 for a more respectable 65-46 final score.
Perry’s 20 paced the Lyons, followed by Shoulders with 18. Whalin also reached double figures with 10, while Bingham finished with 9.
