The Hopkinsville Tigers got the holiday basketball season off to a solid start Thursday night. Don Victor continued his great start to the season with an 18 point performance as the Tigers got past the Nelson County Cardinals 53-48 in the first night of the Fuller Physical Therapy Holiday Classic at Webster County High School.
The game was close throughout. The Cardinals had the early lead in the game, up 14-12 at the end of the opening quarter. With Victor and Tayshawn Head taking control in the second quarter, Hoptown was able to get to the front and take a 30-24 lead into the locker room at the break.
The second half began with both teams cranking up the defense a bit. By the time the quarter came to an end, the Tigers had inched their lead out to 39-32 going into the final quarter.
Nelson County attempted to pull off the comeback in the final period, however, Hopkinsville did enough at the free throw line, going 6-10 down the stretch to hold on for the five point win.
Don Victor’s 18 points led the way for Hoptown. Reece Jesse was the other Tiger to reach double figures with 12 points. Tayshawn Head and K.C. Cabiness each added six point for Hopkinsville.
Nelson County was paced by Bryce Riley with 16 points. Daevon Livers added 11 points for the Cardinals.
With the win, Hopkinsville improves to 4-3 on the season.
