The Hopkinsville girls’ basketball team went on the road to wrap up 2019 on Monday night, holding on for a 60-59 victory over hosts McLean County. The Lady Tigers put four players in double figures on their way to a second-straight win and enter the New Year at 6-6 overall.
A trio of Lady Tigers helped Hoptown double-up McLean County in the first quarter, with Lakayla Samuel, Shaterrea Bellamy and Donisha Flowers combining for all but 2 points of a 26-13 advantage.
Flowers kept the hot hand in the second with 8 more points, but Kamryn McMahon put up 7 to help the Lady Cougars outscore Hoptown 14-12. The Lady Tigers still took an 11-point lead to the halftime break at 38-27.
The Lady Tigers could only come up with 10 points in the third quarter, allowing McLean County to shave 6 more points of the margin behind 9 more from McMahon.
After only scoring 5 points in the first half, McLean’s Hailee Johnson exploded for 12 in the final frame, leading them back to within a point with seconds to play. However, the Hoptown defense held firm, denying the Lady Cougars on their final shot and pulling down the game-sealing rebound.
