Samuel Stays Hot as Hoptown Earns Season Sweep of Fort Campbell

1-3-samuel

At one juncture Friday night, Lakayla Samuel drilled seven straight 3-pointers during a pregame warmup on the right wing.

Then, the junior sharpshooter stayed hot from that same spot once in the game actually started.

Samuel hit a pair of treys and scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the first half at Tiger Gym, leading the Hopkinsville High School girls’ basketball team to a 57-12 victory over district foe Fort Campbell.

The win gave Hoptown (7-6, 2-1) its third straight triumph, as well as the season sweep over the Lady Falcons in 8th District action. HHS won the first meeting 75-11 on post.

After outscoring FCHS 16-0 in the opening frame, the Lady Tigers poured it on with a three-quarter press and by forcing 19 first-half turnovers. Shaterrea Bellamy also got into the act for Hopkinsville, scoring all 12 of her points before halftime.

Donnisha Flowers also helped set the tone for HHS, collecting six points, four rebounds and three steals during the opening eight minutes. She added two more points in the second quarter, giving Hopkinsville a 39-3 break at the half and forcing a running clock for the duration of the second half.

Fort Campbell was held without a shot until the 3:45 mark of the first quarter in the loss, and didn’t get on the board until the first of two Arianna McDaniel 3-pointers with 2:53 left in the second quarter.

The Lady Falcons (0-10) collected all 12 of their points from long range. Marissa Cole and Danielle Houston also hit from deep during the final two minutes of the contest.

Hoptown will have a few days off before starting a four-game stretch on the road, beginning Tuesday against unbeaten Madisonville-North Hopkins. The Lady Maroons (13-0) are undefeated (4-0) against 2nd Region squads and are averaging over 60 points per game.

Fort Campbell will host Pleasant View Christian (TN) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
