Trailing in the fourth quarter and facing the prospect of their ninth-straight loss, the Heritage Christian Academy Lady Warriors dug deep and pulled out a 45-37 victory over Somerset Christian on Saturday. The Homecoming-Day win is the first for HCA since a 31-point thrashing of the same Lady Cougars team back in early December.
The Lady Warriors trailed for the first half of the first quarter, before a 7-2 spurt capped by a Meredith Crunk jumper gave them a 15-9 advantage.
After scoring 9 first-quarter points, Somerset’s Ali Ricks kept the hot hand with 8 more in the second. The teams battled back and forth until the Lady Cougars broke a 20-20 deadlock with a 5-point run to take a 25-20 edge into halftime.
Neither team broke double digits in the third quarter and Somerset led by 4 going to the fourth quarter. Abbi Bullock scored 4-straight to tie the game at 35-35 with 4:19 to play, before Crunk connected on a short jumper to give HCA its first lead since the second quarter.
The Lady Warrior defense clamped down, holding the Lady Cougars to only 6 points over the final eight minutes and HCA closed the game on an 8-2 run to claim the 8-point win.
