Maroons Locked in at #1 in YSE Boys “Super 7”

As we reach mid-January, about the only thing that is clear in the boys 2nd Region is that it will take a big time effort to knock off Madisonville when tournament play gets started. Once again this week, the Maroons are where they have been all season long, at the top of the list. Below them, things are moving and shuffling in this week’s edition of the YSE 2nd Region Boys Basketball “Super 7.”

1 – Madisonville (14-3) – The Maroons pick up district wins over Dawson Springs and Caldwell County. A much anticipated matchup with Male was cancled, however, due to the severe weather Saturday. This team still appears to be head and shoulders above the rest of the region, for the time being.

2 – Webster County (14-2) – The Trojans stubbed their toes in the 2A tournament against Calloway County. Whether that is a sign of some issues with this team or not, will be seen in the days ahead. Still not sure exactly how to read this team. A rematch with Hopkinsville should give us some more insight.

3 – University Heights (8-8) – After struggling earlier in the season, this team appears to be getting its act together. Players seem to be learning their specific roles and making plays that were not happening back in December. Huge game Friday night against Lyon County in the All A regional semifinals.

4 – Henderson County (9-8) – A loss to Muhlenberg County is a bit disconcerting when you look at the northern Colonels. Two big ones coming up the rest of the week, as they will take on district rival Union County, which has some serious issues at the moment, and then a game with the Maroons to end the week.

5 – Hopkinsville (7-11) – The Tigers have now dropped five in a row against some pretty tough competition. You still get the feeling that this team could be a tough out come tournament time. But, time is running out for this group to build some serious momentum to take towards the end of the season.

6 – Lyon County (10-6) – The Lyons move back into the top seven this week. You get the feeling that the loss to Crittenden was more of an aberration, rather than a worrisome pattern. This bunch has a chance to make a statement Friday night when they take on UHA.

7 – Christian County (6-10) – The southern Colonels would just like to find some chances to get all of their top players on the court at the same time. Injuries, illness, and a brutal schedule have wreaked havoc with their season. Still, who wants to count them out when we get to tourney time ?
