PREVIEW – Lyon County Takes on West Carter in Girls All A

The Lyon County Lady Lyons are set to make their 2nd appearance in the last three seasons at the Girls All A Classic Wednesday morning in Richmond, where they will take on the 16th Region champions, West Carter. The game will mark the fourth time overall that the Lady Lyons have appeared in the statewide tournament.

The two schools, which will meet at 10:00 Wednesday morning in McBrayer Arena in Richmond, are separated by just over 300 miles.

Prior to this season, the Lady Lyons reached the All A Classic state tournament in 2006, 2007, and 2018.

In 2006, Lyon County lost in the opening round to Paintsville 46-43. The very next season Lyon County returned to the tournament and reached the semifinals. The Lady Lyons knocked off Kentucky Country Day and Cumberland County, before losing to Lexington Christian 83-63.

Lyon County returned to the girls tourney in 2018. A cold shooting day doomed the Lady Lyons in the opening round, as they fell to Williamsburg 46-32.

The Lady Lyons’ opponent, West Carter, is making its 10th appearance in the girls state tournament, including the last four in a row. The Lady Comets best run in the tourney came in 2002, when they reached the title game, losing to Jackson County. West Carter has won at least one game in the tournament each of the last three years.

West Carter comes into Richmond with a record of 11-5 on the season. The Lady Comets beat Menifee County, Bath County, and Elliot County to take home the 16th Region All A title. West Carter averages 60.1 points per game, while giving up 53.2 points per game.

West Carter is led by Allie Stone, who averages 18.6 points per game. Stone is also the team’s leading rebounder at 5.8 boards per contest. The Lady Comets have five players averaging betweem 5.8 and 8.3 points per game.

Lyon County enters the game with a record of 9-9 on the season. The Lady Lyons average 50.3 points per game, while giving up an average of 46.1 points per contest.

Coming into the region final, Lyon County was led in scoring by Rose Smith at 14.0 points per game. Cathryn Brown is also in double figures at 11.2. Calista Collins is the Lady Lyons leading rebounder at 8.3 rebounds per contest.

One big area of concern for Lyon County will be at the free throw line. The Lady Lyons are at just over 55-percent from the stripe this season, while West Carter has been lighting it up at just over 74 percent.

The meeting will mark one of the view contests ever for West Carter against a western Kentucky school.
