Kentucky freshman guard Khalil Whitney has announced he is leaving the basketball program.
Whitney played 20 or more minutes in Kentucky’s first four games of the season but hasn’t played more than 19 minutes since. His season scoring high was 11 points against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 8.
The 6-6 guard is averaging 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds. He played one minute against Arkansas on Jan. 18 and two minutes in Kentucky’s win over Georgia Tuesday. For the season, he averaged 12 minutes a game, shooting 37-percent from the field and 43-percent from the free throw line.
“I’ve realized since High School that the business of basketball waits for no one, and sometimes tough choices need to be made in order to progress,” Whitney said in his statement. “I’ve worked extremely hard over the past several years to become an elite player, and now, as unconventional as it may seem, I must continue to do what I know is best for my future.”
The loss of Whitney leaves Kentucky with eight scholarship players that see any considerable playing time.
