Hopkinsville High’s JeVon Leavell endured the loss of his mother and preserved, both in the classroom and on the football field and track. That perseverance paid off Wednesday as Leavell signed his full scholarship letter to attend Lindsey Wilson College.
Leavell was an All Western Kentucky conference defensive back for the Tigers, earning the Defensive Back Award from the team at their postseason awards banquet. He had 27 tackles and two takeaways during the season.
Leavell was also named to the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Area Track and Field team after winning region titles in the 100 and 200-meter dashes last spring.
Leavell had a large group of family and friends watch him put pen to paper and sign with the Columbia school. Many of those same people have helped Leavell overcome the loss of his mother, who died last year. They will also be at his side in his next journey.
Lindsey Wilson is an NAIA school in Columbia, Ky that competes in the Mid-South Conference and has been nationally ranked over the past three seasons. The Blue Raiders were 12-1 and advanced to the 2019 NAIA FCS Playoff semifinals.
