Less than three weeks to go in the regular season, and the top three in the YSE Girls 2nd Region Super 7 continue to appear to be the class of the region. Is there a team that can emerge from the rest of the pack to make a darkhorse run here at the end of the season? That is the reason you play em out on the court. For the moment, the “Big 3” appear to have the best chances of making the trip to Rupp in March.
– Henderson County (15-6) – The northen Lady Colonels appear to have everything running in the right direction. They have won their last 10 in a row, and have not been really threatened in any of the ten. They are establishing themselves as the favorites to repeat in the 2nd Region.
– Madisonville (21-1) – The only thing standing between the Lady Maroons and a shot at regular season perfection is that loss on the road at Henderson County. Come regional tourney time, everyone but Madisonville and Henderson fans are going to be hoping that they draw into the same side of the bracket.
– Webster County (9-9) – The Lady Trojans have won five of their last six, the only blemish being a loss to Henderson County. Mark down February 13, as that is the date the Lady Trojans will get the chance to pay the Lady Colonels back. This is certainly a team that could win the region in a few weeks.
– Hopkinsville (12-12) – Anthony Babb’s Lady Tigers will press you from the time they get off the bus til the time they get back on to head home. If they have a game where shots start falling, this is a very dangerous team. A marquee win would give this group some added confidence going into tourney time.
– Trigg County (19-6) – The Lady Wildcats continue to have one of the best seasons in school history. Pressure defenses still cause them some problems, as evidenced by the loss to Hopkinsville. They will be the favorites to win the 5th, but the question will be can they find their way through to knocking off one of the higher ranked teams.
– Christian County (9-10) – Injuries and illness have crippled the Lady Colonels over the past several weeks of the season. There is some solid young talent on this team, so they will bear watching in the 8th District tournament. A Christian County-Hoptown district final could be a very interesting one to watch.
– Crittenden County (14-6) – The Lady Rockets have won 9 of their last 11 games. Included in those is a road win at Trigg County. If there is a team that could derail Trigg County’s hopes for a 5th District championship, this would appear to be it. Plus, Shannon Hodge knows how to gear up a team for tourney time.
