Lyon County’s Cathryn Brown took over the basketball court Saturday like she takes over a golf course in the fall. The Lyon County freshman scored 18 points in the second half as the Lady Lyons outlasted University Heights Academy 42-36 in the opening game of the Akridge Ace Hardware Shootout at Lyon County High School.

The game was a tight battle throughout most of the afternoon. Both teams struggled in the opening quarter to get their offense started. A steal and a layup by Rose Smith late in the quarter would give the Lady Lyons a 7-6 lead as the first came to an end.

Neither team got much more out of their offense in the second quarter, as the defenses continued to rule the afternoon. The Lady Lyons did go on an 8-2 run from the beginning of the quarter to take a 15-8 lead. UHA scored the final four points of the half to cut the lead to 15-12 at the break.

The offenses picked up the pace a bit coming out to start the second half. Cathryn Brown score 9 points in the quarter to help Lyon County keep the lead. UHA would get as close as two points on three occasions, including as the quarter ended, but could not get to the front. When the quarter ended the Lady Lyons were clinging to a 26-24 lead.

Behind the play of Lily Hendricks, UHA would tie the game up at 28-28 early in the final quarter. Cathryn Brown then went on a run of her own, scoring 7 straight points to put the Lady Lyons back in front at 35-28. The Lady Blazers could get no closer than five points over the final few minutes as Lyon County held on for the six point win.

Cathryn Brown ended up with half of her team’s points, scoring 21 on the afternoon. Rose Smith added six points, while Gracen Wynn chipped in with 5 points.

Lily Hendricks led the way for UHA, finishing with 14 points. Meghan Adams scored 9 points for the Lady Blazers.

The win improves Lyon County to 12-13 on the season, while UHA falls to 5-16.
