Caldwell County turned in a solid third-place showing in the Region 1 Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, keyed by a pair of individual champions.
Freshman Collin Teutsch won the 106-pound class while sophomore Dylan Walls took top honors at 126 at Trigg County High School.
The Tigers qualified seven wrestlers for the state wrestling tournament Feb. 14-15 in Lexington.
Teutsch needed to win just twice after receiving a first-round bye. He won his semifinal match 15-0, then decisioned Christian County’s JaRi Campbell 14-4 in the finals.
Walls went 3-0 at 126, including an exciting 10-9 decision over Christian County’s Ethan Wells in a match where both sides had issues with the scoring.
It’s the second regional championship for Walls, who won the 106-pound class as an eighth grader two years ago. Walls was runner-up last season.
The Tiger matmen had three wrestlers record third-place finishes.
Riley Johnson was third at 113, pinning Jack James of Paducah Tilghman in 2:06 in the third-place match.
Cofy Harris finished third at 120 pounds. Harris decisioned Easton Givens of Ohio County 9-3 in the third-place match.
Colin Walls took third at 152. He went 3-1, including a forfeit win over Hopkinsville’s Kevonni Young in the third-place match.
Blaine Hicks placed fourth at 132 pounds for Caldwell while John Paredes was fourth at 160.
The top four in each class in the regional tournament advance to the state tourney.
Caldwell had three other medalists at the regional. Ethan Newsom placed fifth at 138, Sam Teutsch was sixth at 182 and Preston Rogers was sixth at 220.
Union County won its 17th straight team championship at the regional wrestling tournament with 299.5 points. Christian County was second with 224.5. Caldwell totaled 151.5 points, which was eight more than fourth-place Ohio County.
