A rare matchup awaits the Second Region boys’ basketball champion in the first round of the KHSAA Sweet 16.  The draw for the matchups was held Tuesday at the KHSAA office in Lexington.

For the first time since 1941, the Second Region and Fourth Region champs will meet in the first round.  The game could feature a rematch of last year’s second round game that saw Warren Central edge Madisonville 66-62.

Madisonville (23-3) is the favorite to repeat as region champion.  Webster County (20-4), University Heights (11-9), and Lyon County (16-9) are the favorites to win their district.

The winner of the Region 2/4 matchup will play the winner of Regions 5 and 16.  That could feature a matchup between top-5 teams John Hardin and Ashland Blazer.

The Boys’ Sweet 16 begins March 18 at Rupp Arena.

Meanwhile, the girls’ Second Region winner will play the First Region winner on Thursday, March 12 at Rupp Arena.  It marks the fourth time in 14 years Regions 1 and 2 will meet in the first round.  The last time was in 2012 when Hopkinsville beat Marshall County 56-52.

Henderson County (15-6), Madisonville (22-1), and Webster County (11-9) are the pre-district tournament favorites to bring home the region trophy.

Brackets for both state tournaments are below.  Times for the first round games will be announced later by the KHSAA.
