When the Lyon County Lyons and the St. Mary Vikings met earlier this month in Eddyville, it took the Lyons a late 25-3 run to finally put the game away. There would be no need for such a late game run Tuesday night when the two teams met in Paducah. This time the run would come in the first quarter and the Lyons would run away with a 88-55 win over the Vikings.
The game was tight for just over half of the first quarter. Five minutes into the game, the Vikings were battling the Lyons and hanging tight, trailing only 15-13. Over the final three minutes of the opening quarter, Lyon County delivered what would effectively be the knockout blow. The Lyons ran off an 11-2 spurt to take a 26-15 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Travis Perry hit a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 11 points in the quarter. Jackson Shoulders added seven points.
The Lyon offense continued “roaring” right along in the second quarter. Just over halfway through the quarter, the lead had grown to 45-23. By the time the two teams headed off to their respective locker rooms at the break, Lyon County was fully in control with a 51-29 lead.
Coming out in the second half, the Vikings offense worked to pick up the pace. The problem was they could not slow down the Lyons at the other end. Just past the midway point of the third quarter the Lyon County lead was still 20 points, just two points less than the 22 point lead they took to the break. Over the final couple of minutes in the third, the Lyons hit the Vikings with a 12-3 run to close out the quarter with a 74-45 lead.
Unlike the earlier meeting, there was no need for the run this time to put the Vikes away, and the Lyons were able to put it on cruise control over the final eight minutes and pick up the 33 point win.
Perry hit five of Lyon’s seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 32 points. Shoulders added 20 points, and Gunnar Bingham contributed 12 points.
St. Mary got 20 points from Collin Doss.
With the win, which was their 5th in a row and 9th in their last ten games, the Lyons improve to 19-9 on the season. They will close out the regular season Thursday night on the road at Hopkins Central.
