Madison Grigg buried a 27-footer with 4.4 seconds to play to lift Hopkins County Central to a 59-58 victory over Lyon County.
Grigg’s bomb erased a 19-point rally by the Lady Lyons Thursday on Senior Night in Mortons Gap.
Lyon (13-16) fell behind early and trailed 30-17 at halftime.
The Lady Lyons pulled to within one, 34-33, in the third quarter before the Lady Storm (9-17) extended the margin to 44-35 entering the final frame.
Cathryn Brown gave Lyon its first lead of the night with a 3-pointer with 1:57 to play. That made it 54-53.
But Grigg answered just 24 seconds later with a 3 of her own to put Hopkins Central back in front 56-54.
Ella Defew tied the game again with a basket inside at the 1:17 mark.
Brown made one of two free throws with 43 seconds to go, then made one of two again with 30 seconds remaining to give the Lady Lyons their 58-56 lead.
But three missed free throws inside the final minute came back to haunt Lyon.
A miss at the stripe with 14 seconds to go was rebounded by Hopkins Central. Emile Jones eventually found Grigg open with a cross-court pass, and Grigg nailed the open shot to push Hopkins Central back in front.
Lyon had one final shot, but a 3 by Rose Smith missed the mark, leaving the Lady Storm with the one-point triumph.
Grigg, Briana Fritz and Mercy Sutton each scored 13 points to lead Hopkins Central, which opened the game with eight straight points. Sutton also grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Lady Storm was 7 of 13 from 3-point range in the contest.
Brown poured in 25 points to lead Lyon while Smith finished with 12.
Hopkins Central will next face Caldwell County in the 7th District tournament Monday night in Madisonville.
Lyon will host the 5th District tournament next week. The Lady Lyons will meet Trigg County Monday night.
