Coby Lewis has stepped down as head coach of the Trigg County football team after nine seasons at the helm. The school made the announcement Monday afternoon and said the search for a new coach will begin immediately.
Lewis played fullback for Trigg County and was a member of the 1989 state runner-up team. He served as an assistant coach at Trigg County and Madisonville before taking over as Trigg County head coach in 2011.
Lewis’ first year as head coach coincided with Trigg County’s move to Class 3A. The Wildcats were 7-4 in Lewis’ first year and won seven games in 2014. Their only playoff win in Class 3A came in 2014.
Trigg County was 45-53 in Lewis’ nine seasons which included a 1-7 record in the playoffs. His 45 wins are the fourth most in program history and his nine-year tenure is the third-longest behind Dixie Jones (1979-98) and Raymond Heffington (1952-62).
Trigg County was 6-5 in 2019 and scored 36.6 points per game – the fourth-highest in school history. Trigg beat Union County in the regular season to earn a No. 2 playoff seed and first-round home game. The Wildcats lost to the Braves two weeks later in the opening round of the postseason.
Lewis also serves as the powerlifting coach where Trigg County won the state title last year. He is also the co-athletic director at the school.
